Introduction

Garden Design

Our core activity is garden construction and planting. In almost all cases we also design the gardens that we construct, though two of our largest contracts in recent years have been implementations of designs that clients had commissioned before they had given much thought to the implementation. We're perfectly happy to take either of these routes.

What will it cost?

The cost of a garden 'makeover' comprises two elements: the design and the construction/planting. It is important that the prospective client has a clear idea of the available budget before the design work is begun, since the design will be tailored to the size of that budget. Many people, it has to be said, have rather unrealistic expectations regarding the cost of garden construction. Although it is extremely difficult to generalize, we hope it may be helpful if we mention that our average project cost in recent times has been in the region of £8,000 and the range has been about £3,000 to £40,000. Put another way, with even a small team of 2 to 3 people working on a project, costs tend to accrue at the rate of £2,000 to £2,500 per week and projects take a lot longer than they do on Ground Force!

You can see, therefore, how important it is to have a clear idea from the outset of the budget available for the construction. Gearing the design to the budget is essential. The cost of the design itself, however, which is separate, depends solely on the size of the plot to be considered and covers the detailed survey and the drawing up of a plan, as explained in more detail below. The initial consultation is free. The prices given below allow you to see in advance what we would charge for a design, based on the size of your garden.

Price List:    Garden Designs and Border Plans

 Garden Design  (without border plans)

After the initial visit and preliminary discussion with you, (for which no charge is made,) we would make arrangements to return and take detailed measurements and photographs of your garden. Particularly important issues to be clear about include: the available budget, how much time you are able to spend looking after your garden, whether children and pets are a consideration and, in general terms, which style of garden best suits your needs. We would then produce a simple, A4 or A3-sized outline plan, usually computer generated, for your consideration. (For an example, click here.) Larger and more detailed plans can be produced on request, though an additional charge would be made to cover printing bureau costs. Except in exceptional circumstances we guarantee to supply the plan within 3 weeks of the initial visit.

The prices below show the costs for different sized plots and allow for one minor revision. Larger or multiple revisions will be charged at 50% of the original design price. These prices do not include border plans, i.e. details of the types or position of plants in the areas of the design marked as flower or shrub beds. Prices for border plans are given separately, below, and are based on the area of bed to be planted, rather than the size of the overall plot.

Plan           Size of plot to be redesigned Price
D1 Up to 200 m2 (2,150 sq ft) £ 229 + VAT
D2 200 to 500 m2 (2,150 to 5,380 sq ft)  £ 379 + VAT
D3 500 to 1000 m2 (5,380 to 10,760 sq ft) £ 499 + VAT
D4 Above 1000 m2 (> 10,760 sq ft) £0.50 / m2 + VAT

Border Plan

The Border Design Service will provide you with a plan showing the type and position of each significant plant, group of plants, shrub or tree, and is based on the size of the bed/border concerned, rather than the size of the overall plot. Border plans can be requested with or without a garden design plan.

Plan           Size of border Price
B1 Up to 5 m2 (54 sq ft) £ 55 + VAT
B2 5 to 10 m2 (54 to 108 sq ft) £ 70 + VAT
B3 10 to 25 m2 (108 to 270 sq ft) £ 85 + VAT
B4 25 to 50 m2 (270 to 540 sq ft) £100 + VAT
B5 Above 50 m2 (> 540 sq ft) £2 / m2 + VAT

Border plans not produced in conjunction with a new garden design will normally be produced within 3 weeks of an initial visit - sooner if possible, of course. If the plan relates to a garden design which we carrying through to construction, we would normally provide the plan upon completion of the planting, though this would in no way exclude prior discussion with yourself about the choice of planting.
