Whereas
the upper tier
provides seats and
vistas for quiet
contemplation (or
solitary glasses of
wine), the middle
tier is really the
area for
entertaining. It
comprises
essentially a wooden
deck, in an
approximately
quarter-circular
shape, with an
inward-bending
railing on the
curved perimeter (as
on the upper tier)
and the lower part
of the pond system
in the opposite
corner.
The deck surface
is constructed
mainly of 90mm wide,
rounded-edge,
decking boards, but
it is broken up and
made a little more
interesting by
regions of 40mm
wide, rounded-edge
strips (see photo
left).
A flower bed
along the curved
perimeter was
planted with
lavender, pinks and
scented, rambling
roses.
The pond existed
before our arrival;
we merely added the
rill in the upper
tier and finished a
few things
off.
We also added a
stone wall with a
wooden topping and
an electricity
supply.
The
view back up the
garden . . .
.
. . featuring an
unsuspecting Joan,
who built the stone
wall in the photo
above!
No-one can resist
the old 'before' and
'after' comparisons!
