Planting

The most exotic items in the garden were,
in fact, two pieces of driftwood - even if
they don't look particularly unusual in these
pictures. Martina has a passion for such
objects and collected these one summer
from a mountain gorge near Berchtesgarden
in Bavaria.

The planting is kept simple and comprises
grasses, ferns, irises, bamboos and hostas,
set off against a mulch of multi-sized gravel.

The pond was planted with lobelia cardinalis, irises and
houttuynia. Houttuynia, has the remarkable characteristic
that it prevents the growth of algae, even in shallow
                                                                              water in full sunlight.
