Darren and Alison's garden in Baraugh Green, Barnsley

Darren and Allison were kind enough to give us a "blank sheet" to work with. They had already had two skip-loads of rubbish removed from the garden of their new home before they contacted us!

Their main wish was to be able to spend more time sitting in the garden than working in it. They also rather fancied using railway sleepers to terrace the slope at the end of the garden and Alison gave us a sketch suggesting  a triangular arrangement of levels.

We took up this idea and continued the theme of 45° lines by adding 2 small seating areas next to the house - an uncovered timber sun deck and a cosy, semi-shaded paved patio area beneath a pergola, over which, in time, a wisteria will flourish.

The space between the patios and the elevated lawn became a gravelled "wetland" planting area, with a range of specimen grasses, ferns and hostas. A stout timber walkway,  with occasional grab-poles, allows safe passage from the deck to the lawn above the jaws of the snapping crocodiles.

For those interested in the construction phase of this project, Alison has provided us with a few interim shots. Thanks, Alison, for the photography. The model in the sun deck pictures, by the way, is Darren and Alison's niece Fearn
